Learn To Swim

Our Learn to Swim program is based on stroke development. Houston Hydra offers a tailored service for your child starting at age 4+. The process consists of your choice of two fixed days and times. All lessons are thirty-minutes and semi-private with a trained instructor. Swimmers will learn floating, kicking, streamlining, freestyle, and backstroke. If desired, once they have mastered these two strokes, the instructor will have your swimmer evaluated for the next group to learn breaststroke and butterfly, flip turns, dives, and more. All swimmers must be able to understand and follow verbal instructions. Please refer to the Learn to Swim page to learn more.

FAQs

 1. Is this a year-round program? Our season is from September 2nd, 2025 – July 31, 2026. There is a month-long break in August before the start of the new season.

2. If I miss a lesson because of vacation, sickness, or other obligations, are there make-up lessons? There are no make-up lessons if a lesson is missed due to vacation, sickness, or other obligations. There are only make-up lessons when lessons are canceled on Hydra’s behalf (chemical imbalance, pool availability…etc.). The parent must email us within 48 hours of the practice cancellation to reschedule a lesson. After 48 hours, your request will be denied.

3. Will I be notified via email about pool changes? We only send pool change emails if the change is the day off. Otherwise, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to check the practice schedule at the start of each week. Please go to www.houstonhydra.com and look at the “notes” section for any changes to the regular schedule.

4. Are there make-up lessons for practice missed due to a holiday? No, we do not makeup lessons due to holidays. Our software system prorates the monthly tuition when holidays occur. Houston Hydra follows the CFISD academic and holiday schedule.

5. Are there any make-up lessons when lessons are canceled by Hydra or CFISD due to weather?

No, since the weather is out of our control, we will not provide a make-up lesson. If CFISD cancels after-school activities, then we have to cancel as well.

6. Who do I contact for an evaluation if I want to see what group my child belongs to? If they cannot swim Freestyle and Backstroke for the length of the pool without stopping, you will register them in Jackrabbit (link provided on the Learn to Swim page). If they can swim free and back, you may contact [email protected] for an evaluation.

7. How will I know when it is time for my child to change groups? When the instructor feels your child is ready, they will notify the Learn to Swim Manager. The instructors will then let the parents know if the coach has approved the group change. We evaluate swimmers from the 15th to the 20th of every month.

8. What do I do after my child has been evaluated for a group change? You will send an email to [email protected] between the 15th and 25th of the month, and we will notify you of the next steps.

9. Do I get the entire thirty minutes if I show up late? No, the instructor will provide the lesson within the time frame you are scheduled.

10. Does my child need to be potty-trained? Yes, all swimmers must be potty trained without the need for a swim diaper.

11. Can I sit inside the natatorium and watch the lessons? No, our practices are closed to parents. Due to insurance purposes, only swimmers are allowed on deck. You may watch the lessons from any of the glass windows the Aquatic center offers.

12. Can I bring my swimmer into the locker room to change? No, due to SafeSport policies, Adults are not allowed in locker rooms. There are bathrooms located at the front entrance of the natatorium.

13. Where do I drop my swimmer off? We request you drop your swimmers off at the back doors of the Aquatic Center. Our instructors will come to pick your swimmer up by the double doors near the Learn to Swim pool at the beginning of their lesson time.

14. What equipment does my child need? A comfortable swimsuit and goggles. Please tie your child’s hair back so it is not distracting or in the way when swimming.

15. Will I be charged for the month of August? No, we completely clear all learn-to-swim accounts after the last day of practice.

16. Do I have to register my child in August if I recently registered in the last couple of months? Yes, you will have to re-register for the new season starting mid-August.

17. What if I want to take a break from the program during the year?  If you wish to take time off from Learn to Swim, you must email us with your request by the 15th of the month before the next billing cycle on the 1st of the month. Otherwise, your request will be denied, and your account will be charged for the month.

18. Can I sign my swimmer up for 1 class a week?

No, we do require that your swimmer is in 2 classes per week. We find that when swimmers are practicing consistently, the repetition can help progress them faster.

19. How do I know where lessons are?

You may view the practice schedule on the Houston Hydra website. The schedule is updated each week and we strongly encourage parents to check it.

20. Is there a refund if a lesson is canceled? No, the monthly tuition is based on four weeks of classes. However, four months in the season have five weeks. Those extra weeks are not charged to you, so any planned breaks, unforeseen weather cancellations, or school holiday ends up evening out.
